Morning comes too quickly. I grunt as sunlight prickles at my closed eyes. I sit up slowly, remembering the previous night’s activities. Molly is asleep beside me, snoring lightly. A smile tugs at my lips as she mumbles something in her sleep. I kiss her forehead softly and slip silently from the bed.

I draw the covers over her, then go to the closet and slip on some underwear. Then, I quietly leave the room. In the kitchen, I stand in front of the open fridge, contemplating my options for making Molly breakfast in bed. Unless she’s a fan of salsa and bananas, my options aren’t looking too great.

Okay, scratch breakfast in bed. My eyes land on the coffee maker. Coffee in bed sounds even better. I start the machine. As I’m waiting, Molly’s phone vibrates on the counter beside her purse. I know I shouldn’t, but I glance at the screen to see who it is. I mean, it could be Matt making sure we made it home okay… and with his penchant for showing up unannounced, it’s better to be prepared.

It’s not that I want to keep this a secret, but Molly and I definitely need to decide what this is before we go having “the talk” with Matt.

It’s not Matt’s name on the screen. It’s a text from Liz Moriarty.

Hey, Molly. It was great meeting with you. On second thought, though, I don’t think I can swing another trip to Dallas this year. So, our collab may have to go on the back burner. But, hey, your traffic will pick up, and if it doesn’t, there are always other career options. Influencing just isn't for everyone.

Wow. I blink in surprise, floored by the sheer passive aggression Liz achieved in a single text. Molly’s going to be crushed. I’m not sure what possesses me to open her phone (which doesn’t have a passcode, because this is Molly we’re talking about), and delete Liz’s text. I send Liz’s contact to myself, then grab my phone from the charger by the couch.

“Hey Liz,” I type. “It’s Chris Devon. I’m sure you guessed this when you met with Molly the other night, but she means a lot to me… and this collab means a lot to her. I was thinking, if you could get out to Dallas to work with Molly, I could do an interview with you for your blog. Kill two birds with one stone. Molly is an amazing chef, you’ll be sorry if you let this opportunity go.”

Liz’s response is immediate. “Yes. I’ll text Molly the details.”

Guilt rolls in my stomach as I pour our coffees. I shouldn’t have meddled. Molly is the type who wants to make it on her own. She would have handled the rejection. She’s a big girl… but I couldn’t help myself, and there's no going back now.

Arms wrap around my waist from behind. “Morning,” says Molly with a delicious husk to her voice.

I turn in her arms, kissing her deeply. “Morning. I made coffee.
